This story is about Radoslaw Nowosielski, who decided to learn Java and later – mobile development to enhance his programming skills and switch his current occupation. He studied on Java Fundamentals and Android App development for beginners courses.
At CodeGym, my initial goal was to learn the basics of Java
I am from Poland, 45 years old, and currently working on board of RoRo vessel as a Chief Officer. I graduated from the Naval Academy in Gdynia and have an MSc in sea navigation. Last year, I began to think about changing my profession to start working at the shore and decided to learn to program.
I’ve known about CodeGym for quite some time: I registered for the self-paced CodeGym course in December 2021. My goal was to learn the basics of Java. Later, I participated in the Java Fundamentals course. Milan was my mentor.
I am happy with what I have learned already, and I am sure I will continue
What I liked about the Java Fundamentals course was the nice explanation of Java basics in the lessons and lots of exercises. The course helped me to understand code. Sometimes I struggle with producing my own code, but that will come with practicing. So far, I am happy with what I have learned with CodeGym, and I am sure I will continue to reach the level which I feel is good enough to apply for a job.
The Android app development course sounded like a great idea to learn how to make a good project
As I’ve mentioned earlier, my purpose for learning was to get real programming skills. Before I started with CodeGym, I was advised to learn Java, so that’s how I ended up here. After the Java Fundamentals course, although I grasped the basics, I still didn’t feel that I was ready to make a portfolio project. So, an Android app development course sounded like a good idea to learn how to make a good project.
My goal is to get the skill good enough to get the new job
Learning on Android app development course, I liked the nice explanations and lots of digressions about Android and programming in general.
Right now, I’m working on the final project. My goal is to get the skill good enough to get the new job. So far, I think I will need more time to get fully acquainted with all topics from the course after I finish it. From my perspective, the course is a good guideline for what I should learn. I am aware that more time is needed to master Android development.
Milan, the mentor of the course, impressed me: it was nice to participate in his lessons. I like his way of explaining the programming concepts, his examples, and his digressions. He was generous with sharing his knowledge and eager to teach us all he knows. I appreciate the guidelines I got from him, and I enjoyed our communication.
I will proceed with learning both Android and Java
After I finish the final project, I will continue learning Android and Java. I think I will go back to CodeGym games to practice Java – I coded one game, and I believe it may be useful to continue. As my goal is to prepare for a job search, I will need to learn more and work on my portfolio projects.
