Create a HashSet with String elements.
Add the following 10 strings to it:
watermelon
banana
cherry
pear
cantaloupe
blackberry
ginseng
strawberry
iris
potato

Display the contents of the collection, each element on a new line.
Watch how the order of the entries has changed.

Requirements:

Declare a HashSet variable with String elements and immediately initialize it.
The program should not read strings from the keyboard.
The program should add 10 strings to the collection in accordance with the conditions.
The program should display 10 strings from the collection, each on a new line.

2 thoughts. 1) is that you are initializing a set and not a hash set. Try changing the code to be:

HashSet<String> set = new HashSet<>(Arrays.asList(arr));

and see if that works; and f it does not....... The requirements say to declare and immediately initialize a hash set. Most likely the verification is looking for an initialized and blank hash set, instead of one initialized with values. Try this instead:

HashSet<String> set = new HashSet<>();
set.addAll(Arrays.asList(arr));

One of these should fix your issue and allow it to verify.

Why are you doing:

HashSet<String> set = new HashSet<>();

instead of:

HashSet<String> set = new HashSet<String>();

I don't know if there is a difference either way. I have found that it compiles and runs with both methods the same exact way. The only reason that i use it the way that I do is that the IDE auto completes it that way when you type "new H" (or new anything with the angle brackets). I don't know anymore as I am still learning and tinkering with different ways of doing things.

That's cool, i was just wondering. In any event, you don't actually need to put <String> at all. It just helps the compiler see if you used the variable with the wrong type.

It depends on the version of Java, the latest one allow you to write

HashSet<String> set = new HashSet<>();

instead of

HashSet<String> set = new HashSet<String>();
