Ok so i looked over the answers in the help section, and i still cannot get the code to output only one of the numbers... I am unsure why this is happening, so if anyone has a clear cut reason, please, help :) Thank you all.

Write the displayClosestToTen method. The method should display the argument that is nearest to 10.
For example, given the numbers 8 and 11, 11 is closest to ten. If both numbers are equally close to 10, then display either of them.

Hint:
use the public static int abs(int a) method, which returns the absolute value of a number.

Requirements:

The program should display text on the screen.
The main method should not call System.out.println or System.out.print().
The main method should call the displayClosestToTen method.
The displayClosestToTen method should call the abs method.
The displayClosestToTen method should display a number on the screen in accordance with the task conditions.

Yeah I've tried about 30 different ways about this, but the output is always both of the numbers that are closest to 10... An the last condition is to display either of the two. Not sure tbh, it's just getting extremely frustrating... Thank you anyway Dawid

I dont get it. After all, your program only displays one number and what is more the one is closer to 10. Well, I mean two. However only because the function is called twice and it the way it should be. What you mean by it should print only one number?

In the text above it says: For example, given the numbers 8 and 11, 11 is closest to ten. If both numbers are equally close to 10, then display either of them. This is the problem, my code outputs 11 and 7, but it says either of them, not both... and so it won't pass my code....

I assure you that it is absolutely correct. Your function is called twice. First on (8,11) -> displays 11 cause closer to 10, then (7,14) -> displays 7 cause closer to 10. Like i said at the beginning. Delete else in last if. If that dont work try this: if((abs(10-a)) > (abs(10-b))) System.out.println(b); and adequately for other cases.

Greetings, Boris. Based on what you indicated with 11 and 7 both printing, that is absolutely correct. The reference of "If both numbers are equally close to 10, then display either of them" is related each call individually. So, using your code: 1) (8,11) and 2) (7,14). You should see 11 and 7 printed on separate lines. That is 100% correct. The real test, is to change the values in one of those calls. Let's use #1. Change it to (8, 12). Both 8 and 12 are equally close to 10 so only one of those numbers should print in that call (8 by your code). If you are still having issues, please post a snapshot of what it is telling you.

Hi Tom, Honestly, my only issue is that i don't fully understand what the above example should do. I've changed the numbers, and it still outputs both 8 and 7 (i've changed both pairs of numbers), i want to understand what it is i am doing or should be doing to get the output to be only one.

Hi Boris, The problem asks you to print either(any one(a or b)) of them if both values are same. So you need to add just one else condition which prints either of the input numbers and not both. And in the last else condition it is not needed to provide the codition. i.e instead of doing "else if (A == B) { System.out.println(a);" simply put "else System.out.println(a)". Hope this helps.

To be honest I don't know what is wrong with your solution, maybe I would try to remove if in the last else.If that doesn't help, I'll tell you this: I did it in the way that the distance between numbers was calculated differently not a-10, but 10-a so of course also the opposite conditions to display. I.e abs(10-a) > abs(10-b) print b. The second difference is that I didn't create additional variables like you just gave it in my ifs. Well, but from how I am educated mathematically it is equivalent to what you did there.
