When reading numbers, I noticed in an example that variables were being used without first being initialised. What's up with that?

A look into my crystal ball. Hmmm, I see a class variable or an instance variable. These have default values.

Sure... this means that I can only guess based on the insufficient question and lack of code. And based on a guess attempt I don't want to waste many words and time. If you post code and don't formulate questions so generally, helping is much easier and it is more likely that you get useful answers (but no one keeps you from googling 'instance variable default value' to get more info in the meanwhile ;) )
