I am struggling to understand the affect casting has on numbers.....char = "0", short = 9, and when you add them together you get the int 57.....Can someone help explain what is exactly happening in the background?

Add one type conversion to get the following answer: nine = 9
short number = 9;
char zero = '0';
int nine = (zero + number);

Requirements:

The program should display text on the screen.
Don't change the screen output command. You can only add cast operators to it.
The main() method must contain a short variable number.
The main() method must contain a char variable zero.
The main() method must contain an int variable nine.
Don't change the initial value of the variables during initialization. You can only add cast operators.
The program should display the number 9.

Ascii table: Computers do not understand anything but numbers, everything is stored as a series of 1's and 0's. The primitive "char" has its data stored as a number and translated to screen according to the Ascii table. If you look up the Ascii code for the char "zero" its Ascii equivalent number is 48. When you add 9 to 48 you get 57. Because this code it storing the result as an 'int' it gets displayed as such. *Hint* If you instead displayed it as a char you may get the ascii equivalent for the number 57 instead.
