can anyone tell me why my solution didn't work?

i tested this solution in IntelliJ and it worked there. not sure why the app didn't accept it. I used the abs method and the results display correctly...

Write the displayClosestToTen method. The method should display the argument that is nearest to 10.
For example, given the numbers 8 and 11, 11 is closest to ten. If both numbers are equally close to 10, then display either of them.

Hint:
use the public static int abs(int a) method, which returns the absolute value of a number.

Requirements:

The program should display text on the screen.
The main method should not call System.out.println or System.out.print().
The main method should call the displayClosestToTen method.
The displayClosestToTen method should call the abs method.
The displayClosestToTen method should display a number on the screen in accordance with the task conditions.

This is a creative use of the modulo operator that I don't think I have seen in this task, though I'm not sure that it will work the way that you have it: #1 the math is backwards: 10 mod 11 would be 10. I think you mean 11 mod 10, which would equal 1. #2 because you are using absolute value both 11 and -11 would be 1 in this equation, but one of those is quite a bit further from 10 than the next. You are going to have to figure out how to account for these concerns or think of a new way to solve this. task

Tips: When you have multiple places that you are doing the same exact math operation, it is a bit more efficient and cleaner to pull out the operation result into a variable and use that instead. For example, both 10 % abs(a) and 10 % abs(b) are used more than once, you could recode that like this:

int modA = 10 % abs(a);
int modB = 10 % abs(b);
if (modA == modB)
   //do something
else if (modA < modB)
   // do something else

Also, the task says to output the one closer, or if both are the same difference than either. You don't need to check if they are both the same distance because if they are then either a or b will be correct. You could do this instead:

if (modA < modB)
   // output a
else
   // output b

Now it outputs a if a is closer, or b otherwise (b has to be equal to or closer).
